Call for Applications — Chair and Independent Members of the ALC Steering Board

20 Mar 2026

Chair and Independent Members: Ada Lovelace Centre (ALC) Steering Board

UK Research and Innovation (UKRI), through the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC), invites applications for the role of Chair and for several Independent Members of the Ada Lovelace Centre (ALC) Steering Board.

The ALC is a key component of the UK’s national scientific computing and data ecosystem. It provides integrated capabilities in research data management, research software engineering, simulation and modelling, and AI‑enabled scientific discovery for major UK national laboratories including Diamond Light Source, ISIS Neutron and Muon Source and the Central Laser Facility

The Steering Board provides independent oversight, strategic challenge, and assurance on the ALC’s remit, operations and long‑term development. We are seeking highly experienced individuals who can contribute at a national strategic level.

About the Steering Board

The ALC Steering Board reports formally to the STFC Executive Board, via the Executive Director, Large Scale Facilities. The Board provides independent scrutiny and advice on:

  • Delivery of the ALC Business Plan and major programmes
  • Research data, software, modelling and AI platforms serving national facilities
  • Portfolio development and prioritisation across a large, multi‑institute ecosystem
  • Economic impact, efficiency and value for money
  • Alignment with UKRI strategies and national research infrastructure priorities
  • International positioning, partnerships and scientific leadership
  • Long-term sustainability and future development opportunities

The Board has no executive authority; instead, it plays a vital role in strengthening governance, strategic clarity and national impact.

Positions Available

  • Experience in AI, data‑intensive research, digital research infrastructure or large‑scale scientific computing
  • Familiarity with large research facilities, national research organisations or complex multi‑partner programmes
  • An understanding of the UKRI–DSIT–STFC landscape and its role in the national science and technology ecosystem
  • The ability to lead constructive challenge, ensure high‑quality governance, and promote equality, diversity and inclusion

2. Independent Members of the Steering Board

We invite applications from individuals with expertise in one or more of the following areas:

  • Artificial Intelligence / Machine Learning for scientific discovery, autonomous research systems, or data‑driven facility operations
  • Large, complex digital platforms for data, modelling, simulation, workflow automation, cloud/HPC computing or scientific software
  • Leadership of national‑scale research portfolios, major digital programmes or cross‑institute science initiatives
  • Knowledge of UKRI, DSIT and STFC’s role in national research infrastructure, policy, and strategic development
  • International experience or industry perspectives related to digital science, AI or large‑scale data ecosystems

Independent members are appointed for a term of three years, with the possibility of extension.

Time Commitment

The Board meets at least twice per year with additional engagement as required. Members are expected to review documentation in advance of meetings and to contribute constructively to discussions and recommendations.

Diversity and Inclusion

UKRI and STFC are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We welcome applications from all backgrounds and strive to ensure broad representation across disciplines, sectors, geography and career stages.
